A Tale of Two Pones

In his two years as a captain, Jay Paul Volpone has experienced both extremely high highs, and extremely low lows. In the start of the 2016 season, Pone started the season with 8 innings pitched, 0 ER, 0H, and 16Ks over 2 games. At this point, people thought Pone had a shot to cement himself as a legitimate starter in our league. However, after backing the mound up 5 feet, Jay Paul was not the same, going back to his old ways of walks. Since that point, Jay Paul has had a very rocky career in the RPWL. Now, fast forward to the 2017 season, and Pone had a similar year. We saw Pone give up 11 runs in 4 innings, and we saw him post several shutout performances. The underlying factor in Pone's success (in my opinion) is limiting his innings. That being said Jay Paul could definitely fill a closer role for any team in the 2018 season.

2017 Recap:

I honestly feel bad for Jay Paul. Too put it simply, he shouldn't be a captain. We found that out in the 2016 season, but by losing Greg, we didn't have any other choice. Thankfully enough, Pone still stepped up when we needed him and always gave his 100% effort. After posting a 6-19 record over his two seasons as a captain, it's safe to say he's pretty excited to just be a player in the draft next year. Honestly Pone is really more of a #2-3 pitcher in a rotation anyway, and I believe that with some work in the offseason, he could definitely turn into a pretty decent closer this year. We've seen him at his best (throwing 4 innings and allowing zero runs on 3 different occasions this year), and we've all seen him at his worst (11 runs in 4 innings against the O's), but if Pone limits his innings, he could fill a legitimate closer role for any team that needs him. I can't pin the Brewers discouraging season all on him though, as their team chemistry with Dane McGrath really hurt the team as a whole. In addition to a lack of chemistry, I feel as though Josh Butler may have been the unluckiest hitter ever this year, making solid contact in over half his at bats, just to hit into an out, dropping his avg. from .458 in the 2016 season down to a measly .150 this season. Pone will probably be a late second rounder-early third rounder in the 2018 draft, and will look to help his new captain however need be.
