The Red Sox
The 8th Man
After finishing top 6 in their first year at the NWLA tournament, the Longballs are looking to return and improve on their game. Due to the roster only having 7 out of 8 spots filled, the best way to improve is to just add another valuable asset to the team. This asset, is Tyler Nachbar. After an astounding year on the mound in the 2017 season, Nachbar has secured the 8th and final spot on the Longballs with the sole purpose of pitching. With the addition of Nachbar, coupled with Bingnear and Loftus, the Longballs have a legitimate three-armed force for a rotation, and greatly improve their chances at a deep tournament run. Nachbar will be put to the test in the middle of July, and will hopefully be just as dominant as he was in the 2017 season.
2018 Preview: Competition for Bingnear
At the time of the 2017 draft, Tyler Nachbar was projected to go in the top three, but only showing up to five out of ten games in the 2016 season really hurt his draft value. With the third pick, I skeptically took a chance on Tnach, hoping that since I schedule the games, I'd be able to get him to show up more. This paid off extremely well as Tyler was present at all 18 games for the A's this season, and had a huge impact to the team. Nachbar's numbers were insane; he started the season on a 30 inning scoreless streak, finished with a 9-1 record, 72 strikeouts, and a 0.56 ERA over 45 innings (Oh yeah, and he won the AL Cy Young). Without Nachbar, it's safe to say the A's probably wouldn't have been 12-6 on the year. That being said, because of Nachbar's performance this season, he has been upgraded to the captain role in the 2018 season, and will be taking over Jay Paul's position in the AL. With the addition of Nachbar, the AL holds the A's, Royals, and Dbacks; all teams that finished above .500 in 2017. In both 2016 and 2017, the Sean Bingnear lead Dbacks have advanced to the championship via an ALCS sweep over the A's, but with the new addition of Nachbar's Red Sox, Bingnear with have a tougher road to his 3rd straight championship appearance. It has been made clear that Nachbar will be taking Vinny Albanese with the 5th overall pick in the draft, having faith that he will be able to carry the pitching role, while Vinny can provide at the plate. This combination will work well as long as Nachbar stays at the top of his game on the mound, since Vinny is definitely not known for his pitching. Nachbar has a lot of promise as a new captain and his 2018 campaign should not disappoint.
